Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of YouTube videos in enhancing junior high school students’ English listening comprehension. The method used was quasi experimental with two groups: an experimental class that received treatment through YouTube-based learning videos, and a control class that was taught using conventional audio methods. The research was conducted at SMPN 2 Ngadiluwih with class VIII students as participants. Data were collected using pre-tests and post-tests consisting of multiple-choice items, and analyzed through statistical tests including normality, homogeneity, and Independent Samples t-Test. The results showed a significant difference between the two groups. The experimental group, which used YouTube videos, demonstrated a higher mean post test score (87.71) compared to the control group (65.34), indicating improved listening comprehension. The audiovisual nature of YouTube provided learners with contextual support, enhanced engagement, and exposure to authentic language. However, technical limitations and the short treatment period were noted as constraints. The study concludes that YouTube can be an effective tool in teaching listening, especially when properly integrated into classroom practice. It is recommended for educators to utilize digital media like YouTube to foster student motivation and comprehension. Further research is suggested to explore its long term impact and applicability to other language skills.
