Abstract
Writing is one of four important English skills that should be taught to the students besides speaking, listening, and reading skill. Especially, for those who are learning English, it is essential to learn about writing skill in order they can use it to communicate and to express their ideas, opinions, thoughts by using words, sentences, paragraphs through written form without having face to face with other people directly. One of kinds of writing that the students should learn is Descriptive Text. In fact, most of the students still get confused when learning and writing a descriptive text. They still feel difficult to follow the writing stages and to get their ideas what to write on their paper. Guided Question is one of the ways that can be used to solve this problem. Guided Question is a teaching technique which is used to teach the students by giving them 5W + 1H questions in order to direct the students to generate their ideas when they are writing. When the students have answered the questions, those answers can be an outline of their writing before generating them into a paragraph. In this case, the writer is interested in applying this technique for teaching writing Descriptive Text because this teaching technique is felt easy to make the students understand the topic and it can help the students to explore their ideas in writing process as well. This research intended to; (1) analyze the holiday program students' skill in Writing Descriptive Text before being taught by using Guided Question; (2) analyze the holiday program students' skill in Writing Descriptive Text after being taught by using Guided Question; (3) analyze the significant difference of the holiday program students' skill in Writing Descriptive Text after and before being taught by using Guided Question; (4) analyze the effectiveness of Guided Question in teaching Writing Descriptive Text for the students of holiday program at HEC 1 Pare Kediri. Quantitative was selected as a research approach, whereas the research design used was a one-group pretest posttest design of pre-experimental design. This research used one class only. The instruments used to collect the data were pre-test and post-test which resulted the score of students' writing skill. The mean score of the students' writing skill in descriptive text for pre-test was 53,85. Meanwhile, for the mean of post-test was 84,69. Paired-samples t-test with an alpha level of 0.01 was used to investigate the significant difference between pre-test and post-test. The analysis revealed that the post-test result outperformed the pre-test result in writing descriptive text with t = 25,605, df = 25
