Abstract
The use of media plays an important role in English learning because it can be used to attract the students’ attention and increase the students’ motivation in learning English especially in writing. In this research, the writer tried to find out the effectiveness of using Silent Short Movie toward the students’ skill in writing descriptive text at the eight grade students of MTs Negeri 1 Kediri. By using media “Silent Short Movie”, the students are expected to be able to express their ideas, so they can produce a good writing. This research intended to: (1) Describe how the achievement of students in experimental group, (2) Describe how the achievement of students in control group, (3) Analyze whether there is any significant difference of writing achievement between the experimental and the control group, and (4) Analyze whether Silent Short Movie is effective to be used in teaching writing at the eighth grade of MTsN 1 Kediri. Quantitative was selected as a research approach, whereas the research design used was Posttest-only Control-Design. This research used two classes which became experimental group (VIII H) and control group (VIII I). Experimental Group was taught by using Silent Short Movie, whereas Control Group was taught without Silent Short Movie. The steps of teaching are: (1) Giving Silent Short Movie to the students, (2) Explaining about learning by using media of Silent Short Movie, (3) Asking the students to make notes related to the movie such as the content of the story, characters, parts, qualities, size, physical appearance, ability, habit and daily life, (4) Discussing together the overall story of the movie by connecting descriptive text material that consists of the generic structure and linguistic features, (5) Explaining the students to pay attention some elements of writing such as Content, Organization, Vocabulary, Language Use and Mechanics, (6) Asking to the students to make group, (7) Asking the students to choose one the figure of Silent Short Movie to be described, (8) Making the descriptive paragraph by each group, (9) Collecting the students’ descriptive paragraph, (10) Giving Score of the students’ product, (11) Asking some groups to inform their product in front of their class. (12) Evaluating the student’s descriptive paragraph by giving some comments and suggestions related their product, and (13) Final review by the writer, Wrtiting test was used to collect the data, The data was analyzed by using t-test. It was used to determine whether or not there is a significant different between students’ achievement in experimental and control group. The formula is as follows:

The result of this research is: (1) The mean score of the students’ writing achievement in experimental group belongs to very good category. Its score is 80.95, (2) The mean score of the students’ writing achievement in control group belongs to good category. Its score is 77.44, (3) Independent-samples t-test with an alpha level of 0.05 was used to investigate the significant difference between both groups, (4) The analysis revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in writing achievement with t = 3.124, df= 76, P = .003 and 95% confidence interval ranging from 1.273 to 5.752, and (5) The result of t-test shows the mean difference is 3.513 with sig. (2-tailed) value .003, and (6) The value indicates that the significant difference between two groups is found. Thus, it can be concluded that Silent Short Movie is effective in teaching and learning of English writing descriptive text. After finding the result, it is recommended for, (1) the teacher, it is suggested to be intersting way for students, in order to make them enjoy to learn languange. (2) the students, it is suggested to be focus on languge target to be good writer in writing class, (3) next writer, it can be the referential to conduct the next research and can be perfected in the content and result by the further writers.
