Abstract

Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing, receiving and processing information and becomes part of daily life using specific language to express meanings so that other people can make sense of them. One of teachers’ ways may use an interesting teaching media to present their teaching materials that also help them in creating fun class. In this research, YouTube as media is used to teach speaking. The objective of this research is to know whether teaching English speaking using YouTube as media is effective. This research intended to; (1) describe the eleventh grade students’ speaking ability in experimental group; (2) describe the eleventh grade students’ speaking ability in in control group; (3) investigate whether there is significant difference of speaking ability between the control and the experimental group; (4) To investigate whether Using YouTube as Media is effective to be used in teaching speaking at the eleventh grade of MAN 4 Kediri. Quantitative was selected as a research approach, whereas the research design used is Experimental. This research used two classes which became experimental group and control group. The instrument used was a written test which resulted score of students’ achievement. Using YouTube as media help students to be better independent English speaker and makes the students easier in learning English. The strategy of using YouTube as media are: (1) Watching video about cause and effect, (2) Discussing the content of the video, (3) Summarizing the result of the content of the video (4) Presenting the result of discussion, (5) Asking feedback from the teacher, (6) Doing test in the last meeting for scoring. The result of experimental class is tend to very good. Its score 90.51. Meanwhile, the students’ speaking score in control group belongs to good category. Its score is 82.05. Independent-samples t-test with an alpha level of 0.05 was used to investigate the443 significant difference between both groups. The analysis revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in reading comprehension achievement with t = 3.694, df= 76, P = .000 and 95% confidence interval ranging from 3.899 to 13.024. The result of t-test shows the mean difference is 8.426 with sig. (2-tailed) value .000. The value indicates that the significant difference between two groups is found. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of YouTube as Media is effective in teaching speaking. After finding the result, it is recommended for; the readers to get some knowledge in teaching or learning speaking, which they have not been known before. They also can take some benefits trough e-learning strategies intruction. The teacher can minimize the students’ problem in speaking and can improve students’ achievement in it by using interesting media such as YouTube: and further researchers are suggested to attempt to hold the same kind of research with different sample in the use of YouTube as Media. The principal is suppesed to support other teacher when they get the problem im applying English lansuape teaching (ELT), such as support them to use YouTube as media
