Abstract

English as foreign language has been internationally recognized. International students must master four skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. To know the level of English mastery, there are several available tests to be used. One of the English assessment tests is IELTS. It is used to measure students’ mastery in all those language skills mentioned. IELTS is used for all people who passionately intend to live in English Speaking countries. In
addition, one of the most complex skills is writing. It requires many aspects such as grammar, lexical resource or vocabulary, coherence and cohession and also ability to deliver the idea in well-organized paragraphs. Furthermore, this study has an object of place to be researched, TEST-English School, a well-known English course in Kampung Inggris, Pare. This course has IELTS program and it has succeeded in creating the number of alumnus who are able to get high score in IELTS Test and they could pursue their education in abroad. The purpose of this research are : (1) to describe the factors influencing writing IELTS at TEST-English School, (2) to describe the process of teaching writing IELTS at TEST-English School, (3) to find out the result of teaching writing IELTS at TEST-English School. 2 The research uses qualitative research design that emphasizes on describing particular research. This research design also used some instruments to collect data like participant observation, interview to student, teacher, and owner, documentation and questionnaire to prove that the institution chosen is worth it to be researched. Then the data having been collected were analyzed to obtain the result of research. Thus this study tries to find the factors that become influencial to get high score in IELTS test, particularly in writing task. The subjects of this research is the students of IELTS class at TEST-English School and the teacher of writing IELTS. The members of IELTS class are about more than 50 members. The result of research shows that (1) there are some factors affecting to writing IELTS. Due to factors influencing writing IELTS, some great factors are found. They are writing teacher’s background, IELTS students’ background which shows that most of students have had a basic of English that support them in learning IELTS, study group class as additional class in evaluating each student’s writing product, the lesson source taken from several reliable sites, and supportive environment strengthening learning motivation among students. Then next result of research focus is (2) Process of teaching writing IELTS class at TEST English-School. The researcher found several results as part in process of teaching writing IELTS. They are (a) teacher’s preparation of writing class which implements several aidful medias such as writing module, lesson in power point, paper of writing IELTS, attendance list of students, additional discussion of teachers before entering class, video of writing IELTS and useful dictionaries like Cambridge and Oxford thesaurus dictionary, (b) list of matery at writing IELTS class which is fully organized and has particular focuses every week, (c) implementation of teaching writing which consists of three main steps : pre Activity, core activity and post activity that has students write essay every meeting, and (d) Evaluation at writing IELTS class is done regularly every day and evaluating IELTS scoring result once in a week and (3) Result of writing IELTS as last factor of research, shows that the writing product written by students are acquired from two sides, IELTS teacher at TEST English-School as result of simulation test and official examiners who directly assess writing result from the certificated institution such as British council, IDP, or IALF as the real test.
