Abstract

Speaking skill is the skill of the students to be able to communicate with the others to deliver the message. But mostly English students have difficulty in spoken language. The difficulty in speaking is found among the students of in SMPN 01 SEMEN. This fact appeared based on the observation for about a month in the school, and then interview about the problem of teaching speaking with the teacher and students of VII-E. From the interview result, the researcher finds that the students of VII-E are still low in speaking English especially in transaksional and interpersonal. Based on the statement above, the researcher tried to increase the students’ speaking skill by using talking stick technique.The objectives of this study are (1) To describe how is teaching speaking by using talking stick in the eight grade student’s of SMPN 1 SEMEN is. (2) To describe how teaching speaking by using talking stick can improve speaking skill of the eight grade students of SMPN 01 SEMEN is. The design of study is collaborative classroom action research (CAR) which the researcher was assisted by a collaborator in conducting the research. The subject of this research is class VII-E of SMPN 01 SEMEN. Total numbers of students in VII-E is 35 students. The procedure of the research consists of four main steps: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. This research needs two cycles; every cycle consists of two meetings. To collect the data, the researcher did interview, observation, questionnaire, test, and discussion. The research findings indicated that the students are active and motivated during the teaching
learning process. The students’ speaking skill improves after being implemented talking stick technique. The steps of talking stick technique in speaking transaksional and
interpersonal in every cycle, such as: (1) Introducing the material (transaksional and interpersonal) to the students.(2) Asking the students to understand the material before.(3) Introducing the talking stick to the students. (4) Giving the example and simulation how to play talking stick (5) Asking to the students to choose the patner to continue the game(6) Asking to the students to make the cycle (7) asking to the students to step by step give the stick for friend in side (8) the stick was stop in the student (8) ask to the student to open the question in the stick which related with the material (9) ask to the student to answer the question. The improvement is shown by increasing the percentage of the students’ speaking skill by using talking stick technique in speaking test. The criterion of success of this research is the students’ speaking skill with the percentage of 75% students got score 75 or more than 75. The result of students’ speaking skill after being implemented talking technique is improved, because in cycle 1 was 67,55% of subject who classified into a succes with the the average was 67,54 and in cycle 2 was 80,34% of subject who classified into a success with the the average was 83.4.Based on the result of CAR above, the researcher assumes that talking stick technique improves the students’ speaking skill of transaksional and interpersonal especially in the seventh grade students of VII-E of SMPN 01 SEMEN. After seeing the result, it is recommended for the students to be active in learning speaking process. For the English teacher should give various activities in teaching speaking, this will make students more enthusiastic and motivated in learning speaking. For the readers did the better same research. Beside that it teaching learning process when he or she becomes an English teacher in the future, and for further researcher hopefully this reserach can be an example of simple technique in teaching speaking, but it can make students easy and confident to improve their speaking skill in essay text in Junior High School especially transaksional and interpersonal.
