Abstract

Reading skill is the skill of the students to. be able to comprehend/identify the text. But mostly English students have difficulty in identifying and doing some question that related to the text. The difficulty in reading is found among the students of in SMP Negeri 1 Semen. This fact appeared based on the observation for about a month in the school, and then interview about the problem of teaching reading with the teacher and students of VIII-H. From the interview result, the researcher finds that the students of VIII-H are still low in reading comprehension especially in narrative text. Based on the statement above, the researcher tried to increase the students’ reading comprehension skill by using NHT (Numbered Heads Together) technique. The objectives of this study, those are (1) to describe how NHT (Numbered Heads Together) technique is used to improve students’ reading comprehension skill of narrative text at the eight grade students students of SMP Negeri 1 Semen in Academic Year 2015/2016 , (2) to describe how the improvement of students’ reading comprehension skill of narrative text by using NHT (Numbered Heads Together) Technique at the eight grade students students of SMP Negeri 1 Semen in Academic Year 2015/2016 is. The design of study is collaborative classroom action research (CAR) which the researcher was assisted by a collaborator in conducting the research. The subject of this research is class VIII-H of SMP Negeri 1 Semen. Total numbers of students in VIII-B is 37 students. The procedure of the research consists of four main steps: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. This research needs two cycles; in the first cycle consists of three meetings, and in the second cycle consists of two meetings . To collect the data, the researcher does interview, observation, questionnaire, test, and discussion. The research findings indicated that the students are active and motivated during the teaching learning process. The students’ reading comprehension skill improves after being implemented NHT (Numbered Heads Together) technique. The technique of data analysis is testing every student. The steps of NHT (Numbered Heads Together) technique in reading comprehension in narrative text in every cycle, such as: (1) dividing the students into gropus of six until seven members, (2) giving the simulations of NHT (Numbered Heads Together) technique, (3) giving the students’ worksheet of narrative text to the students, (4) asking the students to discuss with their group, (5) calling them by their number and their name of group (6) asking them to answer based on their discussion (7) asking the other students from the other group to give their answer. (8) discussing the answer together. The improvement is shown by increasing the percentage of the students’ reading comprehension skill by using NHT (Numbered Heads Together) technique in reading test. The criterion of success of this research is the
students’ reading comprehension skill with the percentage of 75% students got score 75 or more than 75. Based on the result of students’ reading comprehension skill after being implemented NHT (Numbered Heads Together) technique is improved, because in cycle 1 was 43,24% of subject who classified into a success with the the average was 68.92 and in cycle 2 was 81,08% of subject who classified into a success with the the average was 80,54. Based on the result of CAR above, the researcher assumes that NHT (Numbered Heads Together) technique improves the students’ reading comprehension skill of narrative text especially in the eight grade students of VIII-H of SMP Negeri 1 Semen. After seeing the result, it is recommended for the students to be active in learning reading process. For the English teacher should give various activities in teaching reading, this will make students more enthusiastic and motivated in learning reading. For the readers did the better same research. Beside that it teaching learning process when he or she becomes an English teacher in the future, and for further researcher hopefully this reserach can be an example of simple technique in teaching reading , but it can make students easy and confident to improve their reading skill in essay text in Junior High School especially narrative text.
