Abstract

Reading is a physic and mental activity to reveal the meaning of the written texts, while in that activity there is a process of knowing letters. In reading comprehension, almost all of the students have difficulties in comprehending the contents and the components in reading such as topic of the material is really new for the students and they do not know what actually the text tells about such as: finding general information, main idea every paragraph, textual reference, detail information, implicit information, refer to of word (synonym/antonym), purpose of text, generic structure and language feature. To solve its problem, the teacher should know the appropriate method in teaching such as small group discussion. The application of its variation method is expected to be able to hold the interesting and enjoyable learning activity in teaching reading. The objectives of this research are (1) To describe students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text on control class at tenth grade of SMAN 4 Kediri (2)To describe students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text on experimental class at tenth grade of SMAN 4 Kediri (3)To find out whether there is significant difference of the students’ reading comprehension of descriptive text on experimental and control class at tenth grade of SMAN 4 Kediri (4) To find out whether the teaching reading by using small group discussion at tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Kediri effective or not This research was quantitative experimental design. There are control and experimental class. The students’ experimental class were taught by using small group discussion and control class was not taught by using small group discussion. The data of this study is collected by test and to know the effectiveness of using small group discussion. The data analyzed by using t-test the first the writer prepared the material of reading descriptive text and small group discussion. Then the writer used control and experimental class to teach reading. After that the writer gave test to get the score and analyzed the data by using t-test. The Result of research showed (1) The Students’ Reading Comprehension Descriptive Text In Control Class without Using Small Group Discussion is in a fair category. (2) The Students’ Reading Comprehension Descriptive Text in Experimental Class by Using Small Group Discussion is in a good category.(3) There was significant difference between the Students’ reading comprehension descriptive text in experimental by using small group discussion and control class without using Small Group Discussion. The mean of control class without taught by using small group discussion was 64,66. The mean of experimental class taught by using small group discussion was 75,00.(4) Teaching reading in descriptive text by using small group discussion is effective. It could be seen from the result that The top, shown in the table is (3.143). Whereas, the degree of freedom of posttest is (56), means that the tri, is (2.65) at the level 0.01. Based on the scores gained, we can state that tot: (3.143) is higher than the tcrit (2.65). It is proven by the SPSS computation that is significant at 2-tailed. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. After knowing the result, it is recommended for teacher to teach reading by using Small group discussion. It is also recommended for the students to improve their reading comprehension in comprehending the text and for the last recommended for the next researcher to complete in this research.
