Abstract

As a foreign language, listening is one of the language skill that is difficult to be mastered. By the researcher experience during teaching at MAN Krecek Pare for 2,5 months, there are many students of XI IPA 2 who are low in their listening mastery. It is proved by the value in listening section of the students achievement is still low. The average of the students is only 51, with 9% students who got achieved score . The minimum standard criteria in MAN Krecek is 75 (seventy five).From the interview, the students who could not pass the minimum standard are because; Listening reaching listening process is still monotonous,the students are bored in listening learning process and the students had no confident in listening learning process.Based on the problems above, the researcher did classroom action research (CAR) to solve the problems and improve the average score of the students in XI IPA 2. The aim of this study is to improve students’ listening skill through listening songs in XI IPA 2 at MAN Krecek Pare. The subjects of this study were consisted of 32 students. The method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This study was conducted following Kemmis & Taggart in Kasbolah & Sukaryana, 2001 model with the following procedures of the action research: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The study was carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. The methods used in collecting data were test, interview, observation c hecklist and field notes. The result of the study showed that there was improvement of students’
activity in listening skill. The material is focused on the songs. The researcher did some steps, there are (1) Checking the sound before starting the listening sections, (2) Reminding the students to be focus (3) Giving 2 songs with blank spaces on it, (4) Replay the songs for 3 times for each song, (5) Checking the answers together. The researcher gave two songs in each cycle as the media for listening learning. The students fill the blanks on paper lyrics and gave standard listening test as cycle test in multiple choice forms at the end of cycles. Most of the students could get better scores at the end of each cycle. The students’ average score in preliminary study was 51. The average score in the first cycle was 63. The average score in the second cycle was 80. In conclusion teaching listening by listening songs could improve students’ listening skill. After seeing the result, it is recommended to the English teacher to use interesting media as songs in teaching listening. Because songs is an alternative media in teaching listening.
