Abstract

Speaking skill is the skill of the students to be able to communicate with the others to deliver the message. But mostly English students have difficulty in spoken language. The diificulty in speaking is found among the students of in SMP Negeri 1 Semen. This fact appeared based on the observation for about a month in the school, and then interview about the problem of teaching speaking with the teacher and students of VII-B. From the interview result, the researcher finds that the students of VII-B are still low in speaking English especially in descriptive text. Based on the statement above, the researcher tried to improve the students” speaking skill by using chain drill method. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe how using chain drill technique improves students’ speaking skill of descriptive text at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Semen in academic year 2015/2016, (2) to describe the improvement of students” speaking skill of descriptive text at the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Semen in academic year 2015/2016 is. The design of study is collaborative classroom action research (CAR) which the researcher was assisted by a collaborator in conducting the research. The subject of this research is class VII-B of SMP Negeri 1 Semen. Total numbers of students in VII-B is 40 students. The procedure of the research consists of four main steps: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. This research needs two cycles; every cycle consists of two meetings. To collect the data, the researcher does interview, observation, questionnaire, test, and discussion. The research findings indicated that the students are active and motivated during the teaching learning process, The students’ speaking, skill improves after being implemented chain drill technique, The technique of data analysis is testing every student, The steps of chain drill technique in speaking descriptive text in every cycle, such as: (1) dividing (he students into gropus of four, (2) giving the simulations of chain drill technique, (3) giving the lopics and guided questions paper to the students, (4) asking the students to practice chain drill technique with their groups, (5) asking them to construct their drilled answered into a good descriptive text, (6) asking them to present it in front of the class orally, The improvement is shown by increasing the percentage of the students’ speaking skill by using chain drill technique in speaking test. The criterion of success of this research is the students’ speaking skill with the percentage of 75% students got score 75 or more than 75, Based on the result of students’ speaking skill after being implemented chain drill technique is improved, because in cycle 1 was 10% of subject who classified into a success with the the average was 70.6 and in cycle 2 was 87,5% of subject who classified into a success with the the average was 83.4. Based on the result of CAR above, the researcher assumes that chain drill technique improves the students’ speaking skill of desciptive text especially in the students of VII-B of SMP Negeri 1 Semen in Academic Year 2015/2016. After seeing the result, it is recommended for the students to be active in learning speaking process. For the English teacher should give various activities in teaching speaking, this will make students more enthusiastic and motivated in learning speaking. For the readers do the better same research, Beside that in teaching learning process when he or she becomes an English teacher in the future, and for further researcher hopefully this research can be an example of simple technique in teaching speaking, but it can make students easy and confident to improve their speaking skill in essay text in Junior High School especially descriptive text.
